In late March, Georgia Conservancy hosted a day hike at Amicalola Falls State Park. This hike gave us a chance to explore more than just the falls themselves. We moved through the southern edge of the Appalachian Mountains, where the landscape tells a much deeper story. The rock beneath us was once buried miles underground during ancient continental collisions, and over time, erosion exposed it, forming the cascade we see today.
We also caught a glimpse of the spring wildflower season beginning to unfold. Species like Trillium grandiflorum, Yellow Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum), and Rue-anemone (Thalictrum thalictroides) are part of a short-lived window where forest floor plants take advantage of sunlight before the canopy fully closes. These plants often take years to mature and bloom, making each sighting something special.
