Summertime and the fishin’ is easy! On May 30, Georgia Conservancy hosted an outdoor fishing skills class for youth and their families at Constitution Lakes Park. As we continue to build a culture of conservation among Georgians, it’s important to engage everyone — but especially youth, who will become the conservationists of the future.
We had a number of families (21 participants in total) join us on a rainy Saturday morning at one of Atlanta and DeKalb County’s most impressive hidden gems – Constitution Lakes Park. Once part of an industrial landscape shaped by clay mining, Constitution Lakes has gradually transformed into a thriving urban wetland that now provides habitat for fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and countless other species. Experiences like this trip remind us that conservation and outdoor recreation can go hand in hand.
This event, hosted in partnership with DeKalb County RPCA and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, created a welcoming space for youth, families, and first-time anglers to experience fishing as both a recreational activity and a gateway into understanding freshwater ecosystems.

We are especially grateful for their support through DNR’s Gateway to Fishing Program, which provided much of the fishing equipment used during the event. The Gateway to Fishing Program helps connect urban and suburban communities with fishing opportunities by bringing accessible fishing events directly to local parks and lakes throughout Georgia.
• Ranger Tasha, DeKalb County Naturalist and steward of Constitution Lakes, whose behind-the-scenes coordination, site expertise, and logistical support were instrumental in bringing this event to life. Constitution Lakes presents unique challenges compared to other parks, and her support helped ensure a smooth experience for everyone involved.
