South River Day Paddle

On May 1, join the Georgia Conservancy and the South River Watershed Alliance for a day paddle on metro Atlanta’s South River. This section of river highlights the transition from an urban/suburban river towards one with a more rural setting. Flowing through the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, this section of the South River, a tributary of the Ocmulgee River, showcases many of the area’s public natural and cultural resources.
From the South River Watershed Alliance:
“The South River is one of only two urban-origin rivers in the state of Georgia. Its watershed comprises approximately 544 square miles of creeks and streams that drain south and east Atlanta, sections of DeKalb, Rockdale, Henry, Newton, Butts, and Clayton Counties. It is a headwater of Georgia’s largest river system, the Ocmulgee and Altamaha River basins, which feed the Atlantic Ocean.”
When: Saturday, May 1 // 8:30 AM – 2 PM
Cost: $55 per person. Does not include kayak or canoe. Need to rent a kayak? Please choose that option when registering below. Kayak rental are provided by South River Watershed Alliance and all fees go to support their work.
Where: South River // Stonecrest, GA // Panola Shoals South River Trailhead to Flat Bridge Road
Tour Details: On Saturday at 9 AM, we meet at Panola Shoals South River Trailhead and will paddle the 6-miles on the South River, passing through Panola Mountain State Park and finishing at a private farm on Flat Bridge Road.
What to bring: Please bring dry bag, two or more water bottles, lunch and snacks, raincoat (just in case), sunscreen, bug spray (long sleeve shirts and pants also help tremendously), hat and a sense of adventure.
Parking: Depending on our shuttling plan*, cars will either remain parked at Panola Shoals or our take out.
More details will be provided to participants in our pre-trip emails.
*For our paddling trips, the Georgia Conservancy and our outfitter will facilitate a shuttle for all participants. We ensure that the majority of boat carrying vehicles are waiting at the takeout, ready for participants when they get off the water. Details will be explained during our pre-trip emails, and plenty of shuttle instruction is provided in the field. We never leave anyone behind!
