For one night only, celebrate our local sustainable fisheries and the return of the North Atlantic right whale with a black sea bass special at Husk Savannah!
This winter welcomes the return of our state marine mammal, as the North Atlantic right whale journeys south for calving season in our warmer waters.
Each winter, the warm waters of the Georgia coast beckon our blubbery friends from the north. Arriving in late November and early December, calving North Atlantic right whales make their annual journey from the frigid seas of New England and Nova Scotia to give birth and rear young off of the temperate Atlantic coast of Georgia and Florida, the species’ only known calving ground.
On November 13, the Georgia Conservancy and Husk Savannah will be celebrating their return by serving a local black sea bass dish, created by Chef Jacob Hammer, to honor this sustainable fishery and their work to protect right whales. Reserve your table today!
Proceeds from the sale of this dish will help fund Georgia Conservancy efforts to support local sustainable fisheries and protect the North Atlantic right whale.

Supporting a Whale Safe Back Sea Bass Industry
Since 2022, the Georgia Conservancy has been working to develop and test on-demand (ropeless) fishing gear for the black sea bass pot fishery in the Southeast with our partners at Sustainable Seas Technologies, Phillips Seafood, and the University of Georgia Marine Extension Service to reduce entanglements of North Atlantic right whales in fishing gear, which is a leading cause of mortality. Fishermen from the Southeast have been instrumental in developing and testing this gear.
