National Trails Day is June 3rd and what better way to celebrate than to support the building of one of Atlanta’s newest trail systems - the Woodall Rail Trail!

Join the Georgia Conservancy, Upper Westside Community Improvement District and Groundwork Atlanta on Saturday, June 3 for a morning volunteer service project on the Woodall Rail Trail in Atlanta’s Blandtown neighborhood, part of the Upper Westside Community.

Our Woodall Trail Service Project is made possible through the generous support of your Local Ford Dealer and Bronco Wild Fund, which promotes responsible recreation and the preservation of public lands.

Our community partner for the day is the Upper Westside Community Improvement District, which works to enhance the transportation network, connectivity, safety, and experience for all in Atlanta’s Upper Westside through investment and community partnerships.

From Upper Westside CID: “The Woodall Rail Trail is approximately 3.2 miles and creates a bike and pedestrian connection between the existing Whetstone Creek Trail (future Silver Comet Connector) and the future Atlanta BeltLine Northwest Trail corridor. It offers a predominantly off-road connection through the Upper Westside.” Click here to learn more about Upper Westside CID’s vision for the trail.

The 1st segment of the Woodall Rail Trail is funded partially by a Conserve Georgia Grant from the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program (more on that below).

Volunteers will help to support the project by preparing the Woodall Rail Trail corridor for later construction of the paved walk/bike path and future plantings of native plants along Woodall Creek. Work will include the removal of invasive species such as English ivy and privet, as well as the clearing of trash, debris, and wooded brush.

After the project, join us right up the street at the neighborhood brewery, Steady Hand Beer Co., for an afternoon drink (or two) accompanied by food trucks, music, and an overlander vehicle show! The first beer is on the house!

Woodall Rail Trail is one of many incredible conservation-focused projects funded by the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program (GOSP). GOSP was established in 2018 through the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Act and a constitutional ballot referendum. The program annually dedicates a portion of the state’s tax revenue from outdoor equipment sales to transformational conservation projects in Georgia. The establishment of GOSP was a two-decades-long legislative and conservation priority of the Georgia Conservancy and we are proud of the five-year-old program’s success and excited for the future conservation opportunities that it will support.
